How the CIP Chemical Dosing Math Works

Percent-based chemicals follow a straight dilution balance: stock volume equals circuit volume times target strength divided by stock strength. A 500 gallon circuit at a 2 percent caustic target from 50 percent stock needs 20 gallons of stock. Sanitizers dosed in parts per million use the same balance with the units converted: circuit volume times ppm divided by stock percent times ten thousand.

The number the math cannot give you is verification. Caustic and acid working strength drift as soil consumes the chemical, so the titration at the end of the wash matters more than the dose at the start. If titration keeps coming in low at the same dose, the circuit is telling you the soil load went up, and that is a process signal worth investigating, not just a reason to add more chemical.

Worked example

A 1,000 liter circuit, caustic wash, 2 percent target from 50 percent stock: 1,000 times 2 divided by 50 equals 40 liters of stock, made to volume with 960 liters of water, verified by titration at 2 percent. At $1.10 per liter of stock, the chemistry for that wash step costs $44.

CIP Dosing Questions

Is more caustic a faster clean?

Above the effective range, added concentration mostly adds cost, rinse time, and effluent load. Temperature, time, and mechanical action are usually the levers that actually shorten a cycle, which is what a CIP audit evaluates.

Why does my titration not match the calculated dose?

Carryover water left in the circuit dilutes the make-up, and soil consumes active chemical during the wash. Both are normal; a consistent gap is calibration data for your dosing, and a growing gap is a soil or pre-rinse problem.

Can I use this for single-use sanitizer dosing?

Yes. Select PAA sanitizer, set your stock strength from the tote label, and dose to the contact-time concentration your supplier specifies. Verify with test strips rather than titration.
